About Minnesota Objectivist Association

The Minnesota Objectivist Association is a group of individuals dedicated to understanding and advancing Ayn Rand's philosophy of Objectivism. Groups meet regularly to study Objectivism, plan and discuss local and national activism, and socialize. See our calendar for events.  We are supporters of the Ayn Rand Institute.

Wondering where to start?

Are you wondering where to begin learning more about Ayn Rand and her ideas and the philosophy of Objectivism? The best place to start is to read Ayn Rand's most famous novels, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. You can also read some non-fiction like The Virtue of Selfishness and Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal. These are a collection of essays that address issues of ethics, economics, politics and more.

Another way to learn and understand these ideas is to join some of the groups offered by MOA like an Atlas Shrugged Reading Group, a monthly discussion group or an Objectivism study group. More information about these groups can be found below.

Walter Hudson, chair of the North Star Tea Party Patriots coalition here in Minnesota and MOA supporter, provides an excellent analysis of why the Tea Party must focus on individual rights and not religious and social issues. MOA is mentioned specifically in this article.

"What role does religion play within the Tea Party? Must one be a theist in order to be philosophically aligned with the movement?

These questions are important because their answers define what the movement is really about. Is it solely an effort to affect fiscal responsibility, constitutionally limited government, and free markets? Or is it something more which goes unsaid? Is the movement on a mission from God? Or are its principles applicable to the religious and the non-religious alike? The answers to those questions could affect the integrity of the movement."

How Did Ayn Rand's 'Atlas Shrugged' Predict an America Spinning Out of Control?
Fox News publishes an article by Onkar Ghate about Ayn Rand's predictions of our current cultural and political scenarios.

"Now, the fact that "Atlas Shrugged" is not a political novel might surprise you. But the book’s point is that our plight is caused not by corrupt politicians (who are only a symptom) or some alleged flaw in human nature. It’s caused by the philosophic ideas and moral ideals most of us embrace.
“You have cried that man’s sins are destroying the world and you have cursed human nature for its unwillingness to practice the virtues you demanded,” the novel's hero John Galt declares to a country in crisis. “Since virtue, to you, consists of sacrifice, you have demanded more sacrifices at every successive disaster.”

Discussion and Study Groups

MOA’s Discussion and Study Groups meet to watch or listen to short, recorded lectures or speeches on philosophical ideas or current events and then discusses these. All that’s required for joining this group is to have a curiosity about ideas and the desire to discuss them in a friendly forum.

We also host book discussion groups like the Atlas Shrugged Reading Groups. Find out more about those below.

A formal study group is intended to be a longer, in depth study of Objectivism and related topics. Participants in this group range from those who have, at the minimum, read Atlas Shrugged or another of Ayn Rand’s works of fiction to those who have read a much broader range of Ayn Rand’s work, including non-fiction. This group would meet on a regular basis as agreed to by the group and moderator(s).

Each two-hour session covers about sixty pages of the novel and discussion is guided by prepared questions from “Explore Atlas Shrugged” created by Diana Hsieh.  If you are interested in attending or finding out more about an Atlas Shrugged Reading Group click here.
